Project Zomboid Cooking: Make a Stew, Keep It Safe, and Use What You Find

To cook in Project Zomboid Build 42, fill a cooking pot with water, choose Create Stew from the pot's context menu, add compatible ingredients, and place the pot in a working oven. Watch the food's cooking bar, remove the stew when it is cooked, and switch the oven off before you leave the kitchen.

Make the pot work for your supplies

Add ingredients by opening the stew's context menu again after each addition; a pot can turn separate pieces of meat and vegetables into a meal you can portion out. Cooking skill makes ingredients go further, but a filling dish is not automatically the right dish for a character whose weight is falling. In that situation, favor the calorie-dense food you actually have, such as meat, rather than building a pot mostly from vegetables. Seasoning changes the meal's mood effect, so use it for that purpose rather than assuming it supplies the missing calories.

You can stage an uncooked pot of soup in the fridge while you collect the rest of the ingredients; it does not have to sit on the stove throughout the supply run. In Stable 42.21, food inside a bag receives refrigeration when you put the bag in a powered fridge or freezer, so you need not empty every bag before storing the ingredients. If you plan to add eggs, open the egg carton first and put the loose eggs back in the fridge, where they are available to the recipe instead of remaining packaged. Once the stew is cooked, eat the portion you need and return the remainder to cold storage for a later meal. If the power fails, check the stored food rather than treating the fridge or freezer as instantly warm: it now loses its cold gradually during the shutoff day. Put fresh food ahead of long-lasting packaged food when deciding what to cook first.

Check what automation actually made

Auto Cook is an optional mod, not the game's ordinary cooking menu. An Auto Cook sandwich can pull sausage from a nearby fridge and still display Dangerous Uncooked; heat it before eating. With Weak Stomach, inspect that status instead of trusting the recipe's name or the convenience of a one-click assembly. If an unsafe eating action has already started, press Esc to cancel it before the character finishes eating.

Feed the kitchen after the easy loot is gone

An unbaited fishing net can supply small catches such as frogs, crawfish, and bait fish; those catches can also feed a chum-and-bait loop for later fishing rather than becoming only a single meal. If you keep cows or sheep, collect milk and use a butter churn to make butter that can be added to a dish when you need a denser meal. Build 42 also makes the coffee machine usable: fill it with water and coffee to prepare a hot drink.
