Project Zomboid Multiplayer: Get Connected, Then Agree on the World
For Project Zomboid multiplayer with friends, use Host for sessions you play together, or a dedicated server when the group needs access after you leave the game. A dedicated server on your own PC still needs its server process and machine left running. Before choosing a base, agree on the rules for loot, death and player combat.
Start a co-op session without building a server project
From the main menu, choose Host, open Manage Settings, create a named configuration, select the mods and sandbox settings, then return to the hosting screen and press Start. After creating your character, open the escape menu and invite friends through the Steam friends list. To resume the world, choose Host again and select the same server name.
Use a locally hosted dedicated server if keeping the server machine running suits the group, or a rented server if you want the provider to run that machine. Neither arrangement decides how your team will share equipment or behave around other players.
Share equipment before the first fight
In the Mall of America challenge, six players began at the rooftop helipad with no clothes or shoes and a collection of negative traits; early weapon calls included a blue pen, a pencil and a baseball bat, while the group worked toward clothing and sneakers. Being in the same building had not given everyone the same fighting equipment.
Later, the mall group tried moving an industrial fridge in front of a door and collecting chairs for the food area, but a television-fetching excursion brought a horde back toward the meat room while someone was trying to microwave a beef patty. The comfort errand had become a threat to the place holding the food.
During the eventual vehicle escape, a departing team member announced that all the shotgun shells were still on them, just before the group lost that member. The remaining players had made it out without knowing where their shared ammunition had gone.
Find out what survives a death
In one modded PvP run, a trip through Raven Creek ended in death after guns had been placed in the server's shop system; ten guns remained available there to redeem for the next life. That persistence belonged to that server's shop setup, so it should not be assumed for an ordinary inventory or a different server.
Brother's Louisville hideout used a removed staircase and a concealed sheet rope, and Brother specifically warned that cars left in the parking lot or piles of dead zombies outside could reveal the otherwise unappealing building. Hiding the entrance and hiding signs of occupation were separate jobs.
The same partnership later raided a safehouse beside a green Challenger, then checked a truck's ownership and discovered that its owner was outside Viper's faction. A similar car had pointed them toward the wrong group's supplies.
Give a group a task it can finish before the food runs out
During a custom one-life ship event with 100 players, Henry organised farming with the Grass Gurus after the food shortage was already severe, but the new plots would not produce a meal for hours. Starting the farm had not supplied the food needed while waiting for the harvest.
Earlier in that ship event, Masy stopped a player at the courthouse and a Molotov was discovered on the body, briefly turning the LAW faction's unpopular security role into something other players welcomed. The same demand to control weapons could look oppressive before an attack and useful immediately afterward.
A later chase exposed a different disagreement between signals: voice chat failed while Sarge followed Bojangles to help, Bojangles killed Sarge, and the kill feed identified Dark. The name in the feed and the actual encounter did not agree in that incident.
These were custom challenges and server-specific situations, including the one-life rule, shop persistence and unusual ship scenario. They are reasons to ask what your particular world permits, rather than promises about every multiplayer installation.
End the session with the next login settled
Before everyone disconnects, settle who will leave the server running, where the spare ammunition is stored and whether the next character can recover anything after death. Give the group a shared answer to those questions before another player joins or another supply run begins.
