Project Zomboid: Survive the Bottleneck Before Building the Base
In Project Zomboid, start with food you can eat, a weapon you can equip and supplies you can use on an injury. Canned food without a can opener, a car without a charged battery and a bed you cannot sleep in all leave the immediate problem unresolved. Get those working before expanding the base.
Food and usable supplies
The 10 Years Later colony began with a broken leg in a splint, canned food from the kitchen and no can opener. A duffel bag collected from a zombie added carrying space; a crowbar supplied a weapon. Neither opened dinner. The first day ended with bagged food instead of the cans already in the inventory.
The grocery-store trip supplied chips, soda and candy. Matthew joined the group on day three, and the can opener finally appeared during the dark, rainy search the following morning. That is the actual sequence: eat the available bagged food, carry the cans, and use them once the missing opener turns up. The cans did not justify going hungry while searching for their tool.
Injuries and rest
The Apocalypse lumberjack started with canned peas, equipped a frying pan through Equip Primary, and later switched to a pipe wrench. Finding a weapon did not settle the injuries. With a dirty bandage to deal with, the lumberjack sat down to read First Aid Volume 1 and delayed removing the bandage until the reading was done.
The eventual treatment was concrete: disinfect the groin, bandage it, then disinfect the hand. Only then came the realisation that those actions could have been taken earlier. Reading the book had become a delay before an available treatment.
Later, with no bandages left, the lumberjack sacrificed socks and then pants, using the latter to cover an upper-arm injury. Reaching a bedroom still did not end the emergency. The bed refused sleep with the message “experiencing too much pain to sleep.” A pipe wrench, improvised dressings and a bed were all present; the character still could not recover by simply lying down.
Vehicles
The colony's first transport problem began with a gas can on day five. The pumps needed a generator, and the generator needed fuel siphoned from a car. On day six, the group found a little fuel and another car with a key. A charged battery and the generator were still missing.
On day seven, unloading equipment exposed a car battery charger inside the roadside duffel bag already being carried. The generator finally turned up on day eight. The group connected it at the house, charged the car battery and drove to the gas station. Lorna stayed on guard because the car had only four seats. The trip filled the car and two gas cans before the group moved to the park in the Gated Community.
Day 58 produced a different failure chain around a red car. The first supply trip brought fuel but left the battery behind, requiring a return trip. Once the car worked, its locked doors blocked entry. Breaking a back window without equipping the bat scratched an arm, and that broken window still did not provide entry. Another smashed window exposed a broken lock. Only after breaking the driver's-side window could the car be entered and driven to a parking lot to exchange parts with another example of the same vehicle.
Fuel, battery, access: in that order, each became the next obstacle. Getting the engine ready had not made the doors usable.
Firearms and ovens
Tasty began in denim shorts and socks, without shoes. A drawer supplied a gun case, and Tasty carried the case in one hand with a pistol in the other. Firing the pistol brought more zombies into the encounter. Tasty was bitten, died and returned as a zombie. Finding the gun had added an action before the character had a way through the resulting fight.
Tastier's next attempt began in a house with two bedrooms and a kitchen. A jacket was ripped up early; after a left-foot scratch, Tastier took shoes from a zombie and used the jacket's ripped sheets to bandage the foot. Those scraps solved an immediate problem.
The kitchen created another one. After eating chips and dog food, Tastier put food in the hot oven and went to watch television. The meal was followed by a house fire. The attempted escape car then had neither a key nor gas. The ripped jacket had worked as a dressing; the oven and parked car had each been left with a problem still waiting to surface.
Modded saves
The 10 Years Later colony's rooftop guards failed during a raid in which Benjamin was killed and Raider Frank shot the colony's builder in the head. The guards had stayed on the roof instead of stopping the intrusion. The response was to move everyone assigned to guard duty down to the ground floor.
A later crash removed the recruited survivors altogether. The colony was empty, while the game ran more smoothly. That sequence establishes what happened in this save; it does not identify the technical cause of the crash or prove which mod was responsible.
The perimeter produced a separate surprise on day 292. While installing lights beside the completed outer fence, the builder tried to shoot a zombie through it and found the shots blocked. The earlier fence at Fort Matthew had allowed shooting through it. Reusing the earlier defence idea had therefore produced a wall with different behaviour.
Day 293 went into collecting more wood. On day 294, outcroppings were added so defenders could shoot zombies on either side of the fence; the additions were finished the next morning. These were changes to that particular perimeter. The fence types are not established here, so the incident cannot tell you that every fence will behave the same way.
Multiplayer
In a 100-player, one-life event, The Kingdom controlled a bridge and stopped Dark's truck. Dark said the character had spawned in Muldraugh. The demands moved between cigarettes, a garbage bag and a sledgehammer, while an antique oven also attracted attention. Dark offered the sledgehammer but asked the group to stop taking everything else. Passage finally settled on a couple of boxes of nails, which had already been taken. The Kingdom then warned that every crossing would require payment.
The same event exposed a different cost at New Ekron's base. The retake discussion proposed two or three groups and eventually called out teams of six and five. Planning took more than twenty real-world minutes. By the time the force arrived, nobody remained in New Ekron; the planned assault had become an arrival at an empty base.
NOI's leader Zen also received information from an insider in The Kingdom. The leak included screenshots, and faction-member location information gave the insider something useful to pass along. That was a specific access problem inside the opposing group, separate from the number of people available to fight.
Before the next trip, make the missing item explicit: the can opener for stored cans, the battery for the car, or the wood for a firing position that actually works. At a bridge like Dark's, settle whether the payment is a sledgehammer or boxes of nails before unloading. Return when that particular obstacle is resolved instead of letting the trip turn into another chain of unfinished jobs.
